- ASSISTANT COOK - Sorrento Centre is seeking an Assistant Cook with a minimum of 2 years kitchen experience in a leadership role. Kitchen operations begin in February, gaining momentum before the peak season of May through October, and wrapping up the beginning of December. Hello! My name is Jaime Millar and I am very excited to be going into the position of Summer Staff Coordinator alongside George Sherlock this summer. I was on summer staff at Sorrento from 2013-2016, spending my last summer as one of the Children and Youth Program Coordinators.
Last year I decided to stay home and spend the summer in the city (home is Victoria for me), but I am so excited to be coming back to the Centre for another summer!
Outside of my time at Sorrento I am a 3rd year Psychology Student at the University of Victoria with hopes to go into Education, as well as the University Ministry Coordinator at St. George’s Anglican Church in Victoria.
I am looking forward to getting to spend another summer working alongside incredible individuals and visiting with so many of you!
Hello, my name is George Sherlock, and I’m excited to be one of the SYS coordinators this summer.
This will be my fifth year working at the centre, I have worked in Farm and Grounds in previous years, and I’m looking forward to working with my partner in crime, Jamie Millar.
I graduated with a General Arts and Sciences Degree from Humber College in Toronto at the beginning of the year, and I am currently living in Kamloops.
Some of my passions include fly fishing and eating good food. I look forward to meeting new people and being apart of the community this summer.

We will hire 15-20 people to join our staff for the summer months.
All staff must be between the ages of 16-25
Along with the Summer Staff Coordinator, these two staff members work to create the Children & Youth program, train, mentor, and supervise the Summer Youth Staff, as well as facilitate community within staff housing. These two positions start in May.
Alongside their work with the Farm & Grounds team on site these positions are part of the Leadership Team with the Summer Staff Coordinator and supports training, mentoring, and supervising the Summer Youth Staff, as well as facilitating community within staff housing. As one of the “front-line” contacts for Sorrento Centre, the Front Desk/ Reception position will work with the other office team members to ensure that all course registrations and correspondence related to guests inquiring on programs offered by Sorrento Centre is handled in a timely, efficient and professional manner. Alongside their work with our Office department this position is part of the Leadership Team with the Summer Staff Coordinator and supports training, mentoring, and supervising the Summer Youth Staff, as well as facilitating community within staff housing. This position starts in May.
Alongside their work with the Housekeeping team on site this position is part of the Leadership Team with the Summer Staff Coordinator and supports training, mentoring, and supervising the Summer Youth Staff, as well as facilitating community within staff housing. This position will start in May.
These staff work with children and youth (ages 0-18). Throughout each week you are responsible for co-leading a group of children or youth. You will participate with them in their planned activities, as well as develop new and creative activities to engage them for the length of their stay.*
In the afternoon, waterfront staff lifeguard at the Sorrento Centre beach, which is used by guests and community members. They also plan activities for the children and youth programs at the waterfront. For half of the day, while not lifeguarding, lifeguards will work in one of the other departments (to be determined based on applicant’s skillsets and on the needs of different departments). *
* Children and Youth and Waterfront staff are 5-week positions. At the conclusion of the 5 weeks, anyone in these positions will move into other departments for the remainder of the summer.
Kitchen staff work with our Head Cooks in preparing and serving meals, cleanup, and insuring that we are all well fed! These positions have varied shifts and responsibilities.
Grounds and Farm staff work with our Grounds Department to look after the Sorrento Centre grounds and landscaping on site, as well as nurturing and harvesting produce at the Sorrento Centre Farm.
Maintenance staff work directly with the Head of Maintenance, and responsibilities include constructing, fixing, and maintaining buildings on site.
Working in Housekeeping will include cleaning and the upkeep of guests’ accommodations and site-wide facilities.
Each spring we determine which four-month (May – September labour day weekend) and two-month (July – September labour day weekend) Summer Staff positions we will need on site. These positions are a possibility for the following departments: Children & Youth, Grounds and Farm, Maintenance, Waterfront, Housekeeping, and Kitchen. If you would like to be considered for one of these positions please include this in your cover letter.
DEADLINES: We are now taking applications and will continue to do so until:
- March 20, 2018 for 4-month positions and
- April 15, 2018 for 2-month positions.
